Areas of Emphasis enable students to identify and then concentrate their independent study efforts in areas that represent unique career opportunities. SCHOOL OF PHARMACY AND PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCES MISSION STATEMENT To provide the highest quality education for professional (Pharm. D.) students in the provision of pharmaceutical care and for graduate (Ph.D.) students in research in the pharmaceutical sciences. This includes residency training in the pharmacy specialties and postdoctoral training. Establishing a completely new School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences within the University of California system offers a rare opportunity to expand perspectives of pharmacy education. The shortage of practitioners trained in contemporary pharmacy practice is especially acute in California with the area having considerable ethnic diversity, rapid growth and an aging population. UCSD is one of the Nation’s premier research- intensive institutions with an expanding undergraduate and graduate student base; its School of Medicine has risen to an equivalent level of international preeminence. Moreover, multiple teaching hospitals and outpatient clinics within UCSD Health Care offer appropriate academic settings for instruction in clinical pharmacy. The campus is surrounded by a burgeoning pharmaceutical industry in need of expertise in the pharmaceutical sciences. Accordingly, the common faculty mission is to develop education and training programs primarily for doctoral students, interns, fellows and practitioners that broaden the dimensions of the disciplines, while allowing concentration in chosen areas of emphasis, to ultimately afford expanded opportunities for our graduates in all dimensions of pharmacy practice and pharmaceutical sciences. We recognize that this is most effectively achieved by training the next generation of faculty and leaders in new dimensions of pharmacy. Stellar faculty suitable for serving as role models must be recruited into the new School.
