Introduction

The Automated Actuator Inspection Device (AAID) tests fan clutch actuators produced by BorgWarner, Inc. for proper Electrical operation, in the form of voltages, currents, resistances and capacitances. These actuators are responsible for engaging the radiator cooling fan in automobiles that keeps the engine coolant fluid at a proper temperature. The AAID is an integral part of the testing process in ensuring these actuators are operational, in addition to the automobile as a whole.

During development of the AAID, many design issues were taken into account; most importantly, the safety, accuracy, and product lifecycle of the device. These design issues will be addressed in this document; namely, concerns with the device, considerations in place, as well as improvements that can be made in the future.

Safety

The fan clutch actuator is connected to couplings whose measurements can vary in upwards of 6 inches in height, 16 inches in diameter, and 35 pounds in weight. This is a fa
