AMERICAN Chemical SOCIETY-STUDENT AFFILIATES AT CENTRAL MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY Revised: September, 2007 PREAMBLE The objectives of this Charter shall be to afford an opportunity for the students of chemistry at Central Michigan University to become better acquainted, to secure the intellectual stimulation that arises from professional association, to foster a professional spirit among the members and to instill a professional pride in Chemistry. Those persons who are members of the group should maintain a sense of community focus and responsibility. ARTICLE I Name The name of this organization shall be the American Chemical Society-Student Affiliates. ARTICLE II Membership Section A. Membership Members must be Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society. Section B. Membership Qualifications 1. Membership in the American Chemical Society-Student Affiliates shall not be denied because of age, color, disability, gender, familial status, height, marital status, national origin, political persuasion, race, religion, sexual orientation, veteran status or weight or other irrelevant criteria. 2. Members must become nationally recognized members of the American Chemical Society.
3. Members must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 and be free of social probation. Section C. Selection of Members 1. New members will be eligible for selection throughout the academic year. 2. Student Affiliates and Members of the American Chemical Society will automatically become members. 3. Students not nationally registered may become associate members of this chapter upon attendance of a set number of meetings and fulfillment of other requirements as determined by chapter vote. Section D. Voting Privileges Voting privileges shall be extended to members of this chapter eligible to be American Chemical Society- Student Affiliates. Section E. Termination of Membership An individual’s membership in the American Chemical Society-Student Affiliates shall be terminated if he/she does not maintain the minimum GPA of 2.0 or they are convicted of academic dishonesty. ARTICLE III Officers Section A. Elected officers The elected officers of this Chapter shall be: President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer. Section B. Standing Committees There shall exist three standing committees: 1. Service- The committee shall arrange activities deemed as work functions that are outside the realm of fundraising and lay within the area of community or university service. 2. Fundraising- The committee shall determine each fundraising activity and bring this to the ACS-SA for approval by majority vote. 3. Social- The committee shall set up intra-group activities designed to bring the members of the ACS-SA together outside of the professional atmosphere. Chairs of these committees shall be determined by the committees themselves and at anytime the committee has the power to remove the chair if dereliction of duty occurs as determined by the majority of the standing committee. Section C. Qualifications for holding office 1. All active members who are on academic, social, or personal probation are prohibited from holding any office. 2. Officers must maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0. 3. The President must be a member who has been active in ACS-SA for at least an entire semester, and is nationally registered. 4. Officers must be registered for at least six semester hours of credit at CMU during their term of office. Section D. Selection of Officers 1. Elections shall be announced one week in advance of their occurrence. 2. Nominations can be made by qualified members. Voting will be done by ballots which will be counted by the ACS-SA advisor and/or President. The candidate receiving the highest number of votes for each office shall be elected. 3. The nominating process shall occur at least one week prior to the election. A member can be nominated or nominate himself/herself for a maximum of two positions. In the event that the person is voted into both offices then he/she shall choose one of the positions and the candidate receiving the second highest number of votes shall assume the remaining position. 4. The elected officers will assume office at the first meeting of the following semester. 5. The advisor will have the authority to call for another election if he/she feels that it is justified. Section E. Filling Vacancies In the event that the presidency becomes vacant, the vice-president shall assume this position. All vacancies will be filled at the first meeting following the vacancy. Vacancies other than the presidency will be open to all qualified members. Nominations must be seconded and voting will be held one week following nominations. Section F. Recall of officers 1. Officers may be recalled due to failure to perform duties and excessive absence. 2. Impeachment will be voted by the members mentioned and will require two-thirds of the membership. 3. Any officer whose cumulative GPA falls below 3.0 during their term of office shall vacate the office immediately. Section G. Duties of officers 1. President a. The president shall preside at all meetings of the chapter. b. The president shall present to the Executive Board all matters which come to the president’s attention. c. The president shall exercise general supervision and direction over the affairs of the chapter. d. The president is required to perform all duties that do not deviate from the purpose of the position. e. The president has the power to appoint any ad-hoc committee that is deemed necessary in the performance of his/her duties. The creation of any ad hoc committee must be unanimous among Executive Board members. 2. Vice-President |
