C. Research Support Ongoing Research Support: Entertainment Industry Foundation; Moadel (PI) 4/1/09–3/31/10 Bronx Oncology Living Daily (B.O.L.D.) Living Program for Women with Cancer and their Loved Ones. In response to documented interests of the population, the B.O.L.D. Living Program will evaluate impact of a variety of mind-body and educational interventions on the quality of life and well-being of women with cancer and their family caregivers. Role: PI Entertainment Industry Foundation; Moadel (PI) 4/1/08–3/31/09 Evaluation of Routine Quality-of-Life Screening of Cancer Patients on Psychosocial Service Utilization and Quality of Life. The goal of this program is to address barriers to psychosocial care by instituting routine screening for emotional and physical distress and referral of all cancer patients and family members, and evaluate effects on quality of life over time. Role: PI Komen Greater New York Community Breast Health Grant; Moadel (PI) 5/1/08-4/30/09 The goal of this program is to develop and evaluate “The “Breast Oncology Living Daily” (B.O.L.D. Living) Program, a variety of mind-body intervention workshops designed to enhance the quality of life and health of those affected by breast cancer. Role: PI Avon Foundation; Charlson (PI) 3/1/09-2/28/11 Contemplative Self-Healing to Improve Quality of Life in Breast Cancer Survivors: The Avon Foundation Program to Reach Medically Underserved Populations The goal of this study is to evaluate the impact of a 20-week Indo-Tibetan Meditation program on the quality of life of underserved breast cancer patients using a within-group, pre/post design. Role: Co-investigator Completed Research Support (past 3 years): American Legacy Foundation Grant #5096; Shuter (PI) 3/1/06-2/29/08 A project to understand smoking behaviors and promote smoking cessation in persons with HIV The major goal of this project was to elucidate the psychosocial bases of cigarette smoking in PWHs through face-to-face interviews and focus groups with PWH smokers and ex-smokers. The information gathered was used to develop a tailored smoking cessation brochure for PWHs and their providers. Role: Co-investigator NIH (R21 DA17812-02); Bernstein (PI) 7/1/05-6/30/07 “Smoking Cessation using a Lay Educator in the ER” This study investigated the efficacy of a multi-component smoking cessation intervention using lay educators in the emergency room setting. Role: Co-investigator American Cancer Society Research Scholars Grant (TURSG PBP-105665); Moadel (PI) 7/1/03-6/31/06 “Spiritual vs Educational Intervention on QOL in Low-Income Cancer Patients” This study compared the effects of a psych-educational vs psycho-spiritual intervention on quality of life and Medical outcome of underserved, late-stage cancer patients. Role: PI Langeloth Foundation; Moadel (PI) 1/1/04-12/31/05 “Evaluation of a Yoga-based Cancer Rehabilitation Program”. The major goal of this study was to examine post-treatment effects of a Yoga intervention on quality of life among breast, lung and colorectal cancer patients, as well as compliance and barriers to Yoga practice. Role: PI NIH (R18 DK062038-02); Elizabeth Walker (PI) 7/1/03-6/30/08 “Improving Diabetes Medication Adherence and Outcomes” This study evaluated the effectiveness and costs of a tailored, telephone intervention to promote medication adherence in type 2 diabetics.
