In its first thirty years, the School has maintained a firm commitment to that mandate, emphasizing primary care training, providing extensive clinical outreach in both primary care and specialty-based medicine, and building a core of successful biomedical research programs. The School’s programs have become integral to the region as its graduates have entered practice in the communities, its clinics provide essential care to the region’s citizens, and its outreach programs extend health education and patient services throughout central and southern Illinois. VISION:In 2019, the School will realize its potential as one of the nation’s premier community-based medical schools. SIU School of Medicine will become the centerpiece of a community-based, regionally focused academic medical center of exceptional quality. In doing so, the School will maintain a leadership role in medical education, patient care, and research that will meet the emerging need
